Julie Benz’s stunning beauty and contagious charisma attract any audience. The celebrated actress is best known for her portrayal as Rita Bennett, the title character’s troubled girlfriend, on Showtime’s numerous Golden Globe® winning and Emmy® nominated smash series “Dexter,” for which she earned a 2006 Golden Satellite Award for Best Supporting TV Actress. Benz’s character was slain in the season four finale, one of the most famous send-offs in television history, in a move that shocked the fan community.

Following “Dexter,” Benz had a recurring appearance on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” as a masters degree-carrying stripper. “Uncorked” and “Charming Christmas,” both Hallmark Channel Original Movies, featured her. Benz appeared in Syfy’s “Defiance” and ABC’s “No Ordinary Family” starring Michael Chiklis. Benz has also been on CBS’ drama series “A Gifted Man” with Patrick Wilson and “Hawaii Five-0” with Scott Caan and Daniel Dae-Kim in recurring roles. She was most recently a series regular in the CBS drama series “Training Day,” in which she co-starred with the late Bill Paxton.

Benz, who has starred in cult favorites like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” and “Roswell,” has never shied away from difficult roles. In 2008’s action picture Rambo, she performed stunts and starred as a missionary kidnapped by ruthless Burmese soldiers and as the vengeful blue-collar wife of a slain cop in Punisher: War Zone, continuing her run as a serial thriller alongside Sylvester Stallone. Benz made her big screen comebacks in The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, in which she reunited with the original ensemble, and Saw 5, in which she played one of JigSaw’s most recent victims.

Benz is the youngest of three children, all of whom are talented ice skaters, and was born and raised in Pennsylvania to a general vascular surgeon and a homemaker. Benz was a natural performer who placed 13th in the 1988 U.S. Championships for junior ice dancing with her partner David Schilling. Benz suffered a debilitating stress fracture when she was 14 and had to take time off, but after she was off the ice, she was able to return to the stage, which she had always wanted to do. Benz attracted a lot of notice after appearing in a lot of community theater shows.

At the age of 16, Benz was cast in the “Black Cat” part of Dario Argento and George A. Romero’s horror film Two Evil Eyes, in which she shared a memorable scene with Harvey Keitel. Then came a recurring role on “Hi Honey, I’m Home,” the first ever ABC and Nick at Nite collaboration TV show.

Benz took a pause from her growing career to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at New York University. She earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in three years and studied in Moscow, deepening her understanding of the Stanislavski acting method. Benz relocated to Los Angeles after graduation and landed her first guest-starring job on “Married with Children,” which helped her break into feature films, including a position as the receptionist in the two-time Academy Award®-winning film As Good as It Gets, starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt.

Benz played as an innocent schoolgirl who was actually a fanged monster and Buffy’s (Sarah Michelle Gellar) enemy in one of the most critically acclaimed and cult favorite TV shows of all time, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The series was selected #3 in TV Guide’s Top 25 Cult TV Shows of All Time, one of Time magazine’s 100 Best Shows of All Time, and one of TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. Darla’s character appeared in the “Buffy” spin-off series “Angel,” in which Benz co-starred with David Boreanaz as Angel’s forbidden lover.

Benz also appeared in the film Jawbreaker alongside Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, and Carol Kane during her time on “Buffy,” and she had a recurring role on the sci-fi series “Roswell” with Katherine Heigl. She starred alongside Dakota Fanning in Steven Spielberg’s alien abduction miniseries “Taken,” and as Commander Miranda Keyes in the blockbuster “Halo 2” video game. Benz has also had cameo appearances on popular television shows such as “Supernatural,” “CSI,” and “Law & Order.”
