Another Richmond senior, Johnny Tai, had no idea that his longtime interest of cultivating succulents and cactus in his backyard would provide him and his family with mental health benefits during the past year.

Tai, who spent 17 years buying cacti seeds from Mexico, the United States, and South Africa and planting them in his backyard, told the Richmond News that horticulture can instantly improve people’s emotions, just like cycling and jogging.

“Gardening keeps my family sane, and we consider ourselves to be the luckiest people in this difficult position.” Every day, we are frantically tending to hundreds of succulents. “Just seeing them develop makes us tremendously happy and appreciative for everything in life,” Tai explained.
